Secrets of the East

Secrets of the East

The Algarve has much to offer, a wonderful climate, golden beaches, tree-cloaked mountains, picturesque fishing villages. Less known perhaps is the fact that the Algarve is also one of Europe's most fascinating regions from an ecological perspective. Here we offer you an opportunity of discovering one of the lesser known areas, the eastern side.

To start we propose a visit to a traditional salt pan, typical for the area, where you will be ableto see how the finest salt in Portugal is produced. Be dazzled by the neat rows of salt pans that constitute an age-old tradition from the area and that produce the finest salt for cooking and consumption, called flor de sal. In addition you can appreciate the natural beauty of the Ria Formosaestuary, a wide exapanse of canals, marshlands and sand banks. This is a very important natural park as a residence and migrating passage between northern Europe and Africa to numerous species of birds and a paradise for bird watchers.

Next stop is the town of Olhão, a traditonal fishing village, renowned for the local cube-shaped white washed houses, contrasting with the blue sky and sea. Here you cannot leave without an obrigatory visit to explore the famous market with its big selection of fish and colourful representation local sales and fishermen. After visiting the market it is time to recharge batteries enjoying a typical lunch in one of the local restaurants. No better opportunity to enjoy freshly grilled fish.

Following lunch we will pass by a tiny traditional fishing village, Santa Luzia. It's the Algarvean capital for the catching and preparation of octopus. View for example the tradition clay fishing pots, an ingenious device.

To complete this day the next stop is the town of Tavira. In the istorical centre you can climb and walk the castle walls which offer the best view point of the town over the area. The pedestrian Roman bridge spanning the Gilão river is originating from 3rd century. Most of the 22 churches in and around the centre are not that old, but some of them are certainly worth a visit.
