Walking a part of the Via Algarviana
Via Algarviana is a long distance pedestrian path referred to as GR13. It's about 300 kms long, starts in Alcoutim and ends at Cabo de São Vicente, Sagres, going through the central Algarve along the Caldeirão and Monchique hills.
The idea of this GR was based on an old Mozarab path from the XI century. The trail is divided into 14 sections, crossing a completely different Algarve, with amazing landscapes and many interesting points along the journey in a cultural and environmental way.
Almost all of the trail is is on forest ground, covered by cork oak, arbutus unedo and almond trees. It goes through several small rural villages where traditional activities such as beekeeping, weaving and distillation still exist. The Via Algarviana aims to promote local and traditional activities of central Algarve that are almost forgotten. The goal is to practise sustainable and responsible tourism using local accommodation, restaurant and service facilities and highlighting local culture and natural heritage.
Fauna, flora and bird watching walks, gastronomy tastings, or traditional activities such as the liquor distillation, honey, cork and olive production can be experienced along the Via Algarviana.
On a guided pedestrian tour choosing one section of the Via Algarviana you can learn about the flora and fauna of the 3 morphological areas of the Algarve: the coast line, the barrocal and the mountain range.
We propose the itinerary of the section between Barranco do Velho and Salir covering a distance of 14,9 km. After walking this section there is time to visit the local museum of Salir and have a taste of its gastronomy. This part of the Via Algarviana offers you lots of information and experiences. However it is possible to do guided tours on other sections on request.
On the tour are Bushnell binoculars and telescope available as well as identification guides for fauna and flora. You will be picked up and transported in a comfortable minivan equiped with dvd player and several documentories and you will be guided by a certified nature guide for the Biodiversity and Nature Conservation Institute (ICNB).
